Where were you when the Aussie girls Kerry Potthurst and Natalie Cook won the 1st ever beach volleyball gold? I wish I could say I was sitting, cheering in the Bondi Beach stands. But instead I was out doing errands with mum - just what a 12 year old would wants to do in their holidays! I remember being in a warehouse… tiles, furniture or something like that when the match was being played. The warehouse radio was up loud, Aussie chants and commentary rang out. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi Oi Oi ! Our girls fought hard and got the win over the gallant Brazilians. We may not have been there but we definitely rode every point, a great moment at the games.
Looking back at it now what would have happened if there was a monster swell? It was a large temporary scaffold, 10,000 seat stadium plonked on the sand in front of the Bondi Pavilion. Could it have taken an ocean beating?? Surely they had measures in place to diffuse any such occurrence. Mother nature could have thrown a curveball, thankfully she didn’t.
