At 5:15 am the alarm rang; up to witness the rare and 21st centuries longest blood moon aka a total lunar eclipse. Wow! So cool (I mean hot) did that look... before the demon clouds took over. I had these grand plans on shooting it as at fell behind the city as the sky started to lighten. Unfortunately that didn't happen and I didn't get the shot. Luckily I scored some really nice ones from its rise yesterday afternoon. Bondi is much more suited to the rising sun and moon being on the East Coast of Australia.
Some random Blood moon facts:
- A total lunar eclipse happens when the Moon travels through the Earth's umbra and blocks all direct sunlight from illuminating the Moon's surface. However, some sunlight reaches the moon via the Earth's atmosphere, bathing the Moon in a reddish glow.
- Today's total eclipse lasted one hour, 42 minutes and 57 seconds
- The next total lunar eclipse that you'll be able to see in Australia will be 26th May 2021 (mark your diaries).
- The full moon in the month of October is also sometimes called a Blood Moon in many North American cultures. This name comes from the fact that October is usually when hunters spend time hunting game and preparing meat for the coming winter.
Hope your alarm worked and you witnessed this natural phenomenon. It really was an awesome sight! Have a great weekend, Adam
