I'm going to pivot this 'surf' blog temporarily, precisely for 3 months. Ana and I are currently exploring South America, encompassing Argentina, Brazil (briefly), Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia, making brief stops in each of these countries.
We're two weeks into our journey, and so far, it has been incredibly fulfilling. We've experienced breathtaking sights, captivating sounds, and delightful culinary experiences. While the plan is to share some of my favorite moments with you, the internet connectivity has been inconsistent in some areas.
During our time in Buenos Aires, we stayed with family in suburbia, albeit not too far out. This city is expansive, reminiscent of Sydney with its wide layout. We would coordinate with friends and indulge in stacks of pizza, seemingly the go-to meal when hosting guests. Their version differs from ours, featuring a bread-like base overflowing with mozzarella. Empanadas were also abundant, keeping us fueled throughout the days.
On occasion, we embarked on excursions into the heart of the city, opting for walking tours to gain local insights and historical context. While interesting, my enthusiasm peaked whenever discussions veered towards football. Icons like Messi and Maradona are revered as messiahs among those sporting the blue and white stripes. The city boasts statues, murals depicting World Cup triumphs, and anecdotes galore about pivotal football moments—those drone shots of millions celebrating around the obelisk during victories remain etched in memory. It's a football-crazy country, and I'm loving it!
Following this football theme, we ventured to La Boca, a vibrant neighborhood characterized by colorful buildings and lively residents. Although not the safest area, its beauty was undeniable. After a lengthy ride on an 'expodo' bus, we arrived near La Bombonera (The Chocolate Box), the home stadium of Boca Juniors. Tickets were elusive as entry is limited to members and tour groups, making it unwise for solo visits. Nonetheless, we roamed the streets, admiring street art, and engaging with local artists. Personally, I found this to be the most thrilling part of our time in Buenos Aires.
And then there's choripan—my newfound love! A delectable combination of chorizo, chimichurri, spices, all nestled within a soft yet toasted roll. I could easily indulge in these for days on end.
